Player Roles and Responsibilities

The Fourth Edition clearly defines the duties of each player within a team structure. Under Law 40.1, the Lead is responsible for placing the mat and delivering the jack. The Second typically maintains the scorecard in Triples or Fours, while the Third—acting as the "Deputy Skip"—is responsible for measuring disputed shots and agreeing on the score with the opposing Third (Law 40.1.7). The Skip has overall charge of the team, directing strategy and making final decisions on play (Law 40.1.8). All players must adhere to Law 12 regarding positioning on the green, ensuring that the player currently in possession of the rink has an unobstructed view of the head and total focus for their delivery.
