The Third, often referred to as the "Deputy Skip," acts as the essential intermediary between the team and the Skip. Under Law 40.1.7, the Third is responsible for measuring any disputed shots and agreeing the final score of the end with the opposing Third. They must also inform the Skip of the state of the head through clear communication and signals while the Skip is at the mat-end. Because they bowl immediately before the Skip, they must be highly skilled in playing a variety of tactical shots, including "blocks" or "trails," to set up a winning position. While at the head, they must adhere to the possession rules of Law 13.
