In a Singles match, the Marker plays a vital, impartial role governed by Law 42. Their duties include centring the jack, marking "touchers" with chalk, and answering specific questions from players about the state of the head. Law 42.2.4 specifies that a Marker should only provide information when asked by the player in possession of the rink. They must not influence the play or offer unsolicited advice. Additionally, they are responsible for recording the score on the board and the scorecard after each end. The Marker must stand still and remain silent while a player is on the mat, ensuring they do not become a distraction to either competitor.
