Accurate measurement is critical for determining the score of an end, as governed by Law 40. Measuring equipment varies from simple string measures and box measures to high-precision callipers used for very close distances. Players or umpires use these tools to confirm which bowl is nearest the jack. Additionally, "touchers"—bowls that hit the jack during their initial delivery—must be clearly identified using chalk or a specialized chalk spray (Law 15.3). This marking is vital because touchers remain "live" even if they enter the ditch. Carrying a bowl cloth is also recommended, as it allows players to keep their equipment clean and dry, ensuring a consistent grip and release in all weather conditions.
