Scoring and Measurement Protocols

The fundamental scoring system in lawn bowls is governed by Law 40, which defines how "shots" are determined. At the conclusion of an end, shots are awarded for every bowl of the winning team that is closer to the jack than the opponent's nearest bowl. In official World Bowls matches, only one team or player can score during a single end. Accurate measurement is essential to ensure points are awarded correctly, following the strict measuring protocols in the Crystal Mark Fourth Edition. If players cannot agree on a score, an Umpire or independent marker uses approved equipment—such as calipers or flexible measures—to provide a final decision. Only the winning team’s score for that end is recorded on the scorecard.
