Historically manufactured from Lignum Vitae wood, modern bowls are now primarily made from a durable composite plastic resin. Under Law 52.1, bowls must be produced with a consistent bias, which is the offset weight that causes the bowl to curve during its journey. They are available in various sizes, weights, and "lines" of bias to suit the individual bowler’s preference and the speed of the green. All competitive bowls must feature a valid World Bowls stamp to certify they meet the official bias standards. Today, players often choose bowls in a wide array of vibrant colours and patterns, moving away from traditional black or brown to reflect personal style or team branding while maintaining technical compliance.
