The jack and the mat are the two essential pieces of equipment used to define the field of play. According to Law 4.1, the jack must be a solid, non-composite sphere, usually white or yellow, with a diameter between 63mm and 67mm. It is delivered to set the length of the end. The mat, typically made of heavy-duty rubber, serves as the starting point for every delivery. Law 6.1 dictates that the mat must be placed lengthwise on the centre line of the rink. Together, these items ensure that every end is played from a regulated position, with the jack providing a consistent target for all players throughout the duration of the match.
