A "Trail" is a nuanced drawing shot intended to strike the jack and move it to a new position while remaining in close proximity. Under Law 14.3, if the jack is moved within the rink boundaries by a bowl in course, it remains live in its new position. Similarly, a "Promotion" shot involves striking one's own previously delivered bowl to push it closer to the jack. These shots require careful calculation of momentum and displacement. The laws distinguish between "touchers"—bowls that touch the jack during their initial course (Law 15)——and non-touchers. A promoted bowl that was already a toucher retains its status, which is vital if it is subsequently knocked into the ditch during play.
