Controlled Weight: The Drive and Strike

The "Drive" (or "Fire") is an attacking shot delivered with high velocity to either dislodge opponent's bowls or "kill" the end by sending the jack into the ditch or out of bounds. According to Law 18.1, if the jack is driven outside the side boundaries of the rink, the end is declared dead and must be restarted, unless competition rules specify the use of "re-spotted" marks (Law 18.5). A drive requires significant confidence, as a "dead bowl" resulting from the delivery must be removed from the green immediately (Law 17.1). This high-risk tactical option is often used to limit an opponent's high score or to clear a congested head.
